Rail Grinders
Many years ago I woke up to a spectacular light show out of my bedroom window as the rail grinder set to work on the track at Woolmer Green. The next day I tracked it down in Hitchin. Being a keen modeller at the time I "invented" a way of making scale drawings from my photographs. So as you may notice the stick in all the photographs is 1m long with 10cm blue divides.

More recently Rail track has taken delivery of a new rail grinder from Loram, USA. The unit was noted in Welwyn Garden City yard on Friday (28-6-02) afternoon. Then noted at Woolmer Green on the Sunday morning after having worked a night somewhere on the ECML. The MPV works in conjunction with the rail grinder. It sprays the area ahead of the grinder with water thus avoiding any fire hazard.
